Oh, Sleeper - When I Am God (2007)

[download...]

Oh, Sleeper have a promising alumni on hand: Three-fifths of the now-defunct Terminal (one of whom spent time in As Cities Burn and Sherwood) and an ex-Between the Buried and Me guitarist are present here. However, they stylistically fit all too well within their label's roster. One listen to Underoath's Define the Great Line and As Cities Burn's Son, I Loved You at Your Darkest and you've basically heard everything that goes on during When I Am God's course, even though vocalist Micah Kinard admittedly slides between cleaner and gravelly yells fairly well, if not in a completely similar fashion to Spencer Chamberlain.

Horse The Band - A Natural Death (2007)

[download...]

Yes, you read that right. It is small, to my knowledge, sub-genre of post-hardcore/screamo that integrates 8 bit synthesizers to bring to memory the music of games from the original Nintendo system. Think Mastodon in a mash up with Metroid and Super Mario Brothers 2. It's odd to be sure, but definitely a step in the direction of originality. A Natural Death is their third full length release, and first since 2005's The Mechanical Hand. To my ears, it is a step up from that earlier release, it features stronger songwriting but does not stray too far from the elements that make them stand out.

A Natural Death is a lot of fun. It is out on the fringe, but it is so damned intriguing. It is the kind of music that, when you first hear it, you will have one of two reactions. The first would be to just write it off as nonsensical bollocks, turn it off, never look back, and get on with someother music listening. The other would be to be curious, for good or bad, and continue listening to it. I fall into the latter category.

Tarentel - Ghetto Beats on the Surface of the Sun (2006)

Dreamy, harsh, soothing, and other-worldly noise. An ambitious and diverse album, and easily Tarentel's most experimental record to date.

Highly recommended for fans of Tarentel, or experimental music in general.

Pelican - The Fire In Our Throats Will Beckon The Thaw (2005)

[download...]

A new style of metal rose in the early 21st century; one that was light on the vocals and heavy on the instrumentals. But it certainly wasn't your dad's familiar metal instrumental -- prog-like overindulgence gave way to sounds alternating between dreamy soundscapes and crushing riffs -- as evidenced by groups like Pelican. On the group's second full-length for Hydra Head, 2005's The Fire in Our Throats Will Beckon the Thaw, Pelican introduce a new texture to its sonic palette: acoustic guitars. But those expecting a full-on flamenco guitar concerto will have to look elsewhere, as they're used sparingly. The phrase "the type of album you have to listen to all the way through" seems custom-made for the moody and atmospheric Fire, as it really is a sort of aural roller coaster. With the same stylistic thread running throughout many of the album's seven tracks, individual standouts are hard to pinpoint, but if push came to shove, you can't go wrong with the epic album opener, "Last Day of Winter."

Listen to this album for your own good.

Similar Artists: As Tall As Lions, Mae, Further Seems Forever

Lovedrug is: Michael Shepard (vocals, piano, guitar), David Thomas Owen IV (guitar, vocals), Korey Christopher Jones (bass), and James Childress (drums). They hail from Ohio, near Hartville and North Canton. Melding purist indie rock ethic with the immense sounds of stadium-prog, Lovedrug refuse to recognize a dichotomy between art and mass appeal. While the euro-bent of their debut LP Pretend You’re Alive frequently evoked Muse and pre-electronic Radiohead comparisons, Lovedrug embrace broader musical peers.

Note: Pretend You're Alive is miles better than this, but it's an advance. Enjoy if you can.

Fonoda - Eventually (2007)

Having released their debut LP ‘Blinker:Farben’ way-back-when in 2002, Fonoda made an immediate impact through a sound which smelted influences such as Slint, Mogwai and Low into a crucible of sound that was both pithily melancholic yet sunny-side up optimistic. Pairing down their line-up from a quad to trio, Florian Doelzer (drums), Matthias Neuefeind (guitar) and Christian Unertl (bass) reconvened in 2006 to record the appropriately named ‘Eventually’.

The Wayward - Overexposure

The Wayward are a Prog Rock/Psychedelic/Indie (confused yet?) band from Fairfax, Virginia. The Wayward formed in the summer of 2004, roughly six months after the breakup of Carrion (Nov. 2000 - Feb 2004) drummer (Nathaniel Simms) and Vocalist/Guitarist (Nick Jan Skrobisz) were both from Carrion and were joined by Jesse Stanislaw Skrobisz (Nick’s brother) on bass. After three months of songwriting they toured as The Wayward.

The Wayward are an amalgam of a few different genres of music, but for the most part represent the genre of rock. The Wayward use many different styles of music to create perceptible tinges of a story beneath the instrumentals. This is a very underrated band, I would appreciate if you would give them a listen.

Prints - Prints (2007)

When notoriously prolific multi-instrumentalist Kenseth Thibideau (Sleeping People, Howard Hello, Pinback) invited Sacramento native Zac Nelson (Who’s Your Favorite Son, God?, Faulouah/H E X L O V E) to collaborate on a new endeavor, the two could not possibly have expected the results to be this arresting. Merging the eclectic instrumentation of Talking Heads with the ethereal vocals of Peter Gabriel, the two mingle the precision of Brian Eno and the jubilance of Brian Wilson. It is perversely appropriate, then, that they christened it Prints.

Out of tens of thousands of generic indie rock bands, Prints stands out. This album is great. I would definitely recommend it. Also, sorry for shitty resolution cover.

The Letter E - No. 5ive Longplayer (2000)

The Letter E is a short-lived instrumental band that created multi-influenced and melodic music. Some have described them as 'math rock' for their interesting shifts and instrumentation, but they defy any certain label of their material, in my opinion. Recommended.

Charles Manson - All the Way Alive (2003)

All the Way Alive is an unexpected gem of acoustic pop/folk balladry with an occasional blues touch (although he has more experimental material on other albums), and is the result of a demo session from September 11, 1967 (before he recorded the album "Lie"). Many are quick to dismiss Manson's musical endeavors, in light of his criminal record and general insanity, and wouldn't consider checking this out. For those I've included previews of three songs on this album, to show that his music is quite enjoyable, despite any preconceptions people may have about the man.

Martyrdöd - In Extremis (2005)

Martyrdöd unleash intense raw Swedish crust with some Black Metal influences. Ultra powerful metallic käng that drags you into a world of darkness, anger and despair…This band has a distinct style within the strong tradition of Swedish hardcore. The riffs are raw and powerful, with haunting melody over a storm of raw sonic shrapnel. Two guitars trade off sledgehammer riffs and driving melodic leads. Trap Them - Sleepwell Deconstructor (2007)

Sleepwell Deconstructor is nothing less than jarring. All the instruments and a voice not unlike a deeper-throated Jacob Bannon's constantly coalesce to provide a dynamic pacing and overwhelming sound. While the band is sure enough to slip in a few let-ups and not constantly drill away at the drum kit, be assured that for its entire duration you will not only be compelled, but thrown around.
While half its songs do round off to a minute apiece, others stretch beyond those means and express Trap Them's creative visions well. The lyrically warfare-preparing "Day Five: Garlic Breakfast" tears off a few more intricate riffs, while "Day Six: Fucked as Punk" manages to build to a frothing, pounding climax in just over two minutes. "Day Eight: Destructioneer Extraordinare" is the biggest surprise, an apprehensive, five-minute-long track that shows the band must be spinning some 'post-metal' bands in between their bouts of Tragedy and Discharge; however, it reminds me of the more deliberate songs off November Coming Fire's excellent Dugeness. Of course, it follows with two tracks guns-a-blazing, then the sinister, on-the-verge-of-exploding "Day Eleven: Threatnurse" and one final blowout in "Day Twelve: All Hands on the Medic."

Trap Them - Seance Prime (2007)

The American Northeast has a need every ten years or so for a band to come along and fill a musical black hole of anti-matter that can only be reached through feedback and blasphemy. Overcast (R.I.P.) filled that void competently in the 1990s for a spell before disintegrating, but now there is a hole once more. The re-located Today is the Day cannot truly be called a "New England" band but their vibrations are appreciated nonetheless.

Enter Trap Them, comprised of ex-members of (occ)cult bands December Wolves and Transistor Transistor, to occupy that negative space that is needed like sweet heroin for the many fans of heavy music in the NE and beyond. This is a swift follow-up to last year's and highly-regarded Sleepwell Deconstructor and this new release is worthy of praise and worship too.

Thursday / Envy - Split (2008)

at last, the thursday/envy split is here. and as i expected, envy's tracks are super awesome, their track an umbrella fallen into fiction might be one of the best envy songs ever, if not the best. with these songs envy continues to develop their post-rock influenced sound creating extremely emotional and powerful music. thursday's half is good too but their sound hasn't evolved a lot since their last album, except for an instrumental track and mercury rev's remix their input on this split is quickly forgetable, and not because it's not good but envy's half overshadows it. overall is a great split you should not miss.
