Naikaku - Shell (2006)

Jazz fusion/prog rock from Japan. Naikaku is like a more modern, heavier, less meandering Mahavishnu Orchestra, with a flutist instead of a violinist. The opening to the song "Lethe" wouldn't be out of place on "Inner Mounting Flame." The aforementioned flutist is one badass chick with lungs of steel, the guitarist absolutely shreds, and the bass and percussion, while playing third and fourth fiddle, maintain steady grooves as well in addition to providing the necessary insanity in the several jazz freak-outs peppered throughout the album.
