Air - Love 2 (2009)

Boy this band has come a long way from Moon Safari. In the way that a body might be thrown a long way after a particularly gruesome vehicular crash. It's not that bad, I guess. Every song is well made, and there are some standout moments. But all in all the album just sounds so generic, so tired and overwrought. Air were amongst the best producers of, well, really stoned sounding electronic music. They spawned leagues of copycats whose work you can usually find in the 'Relaxation' section of Borders or on the counter at Starbucks. This album sounds like a copycat of those Air copycats. Maybe you will like it though; plenty of people are just raving about it. Download it.

Leadershit - Leadershit (2006)

Spanish neocrust punk band. Here's a good description from

The sound is a heavy dose of traditional crust with dark melodies, rocking bites and (old) death/black metal slash thrown in.

This is one of the better crust bands I've heard to date. Their sound is more melodic than others and (in?)coincidentally more enjoyable. I really dig this album. Punk/metal fans get this.

Ceremony - Ceremony (2005)

you can never get enough noisy fuzzy post-punk'd shoegaze EVER. so here's ceremony's first release right after skywave's break-up, a damn pretty cold album you'll love if you liked any of my previous related posts.

Skywave - Synthstatic (2004)

since i've posted a place to bury strangers and ceremony already and mention skywave a lot, i thought it'd be cool to post an album for those who've never heard of them and, as someone on said, to put APTB and ceremony in context. enjoy.

oh and for the record, of the 3 bands, i enjoy ceremony the most. i support you ceremony-bros.

Crawl Back In - Hang All Hope From The Nearest Tree (2009)

Heavy, gritty sludge from the year 2009 and the country Sweden. Very good, recommended for sludge fans.

Boris - Japanese Heavy Rock Hits Vol. 1 (2009)

boris are releasing shit like crazy lately. this is their third release in less than two months AND the first on a series of 7" that will be released during the next months. includes 2 new tracks, 8 and hey everyone, one similar to the tracks on the split with 9dw and one similar to their style on smile but poppier. interesting as usual, fucking awesome as always.

LINK REMOVED BY (very shady, see comments) REQUEST.

i'm not taking unnecessary risks here.

Ceremony - Disappear (2007)

get it if you like: skywave, a place to bury strangers, the december sound, screen vinyl image, the raveonettes, new order, joy division (THIS BAND IS AMAZING).

when skywave broke up their members went on to form 2 bands. one was a place to bury strangers, a band that anyone with decent taste in music or/and a soul likes by now. the other band was ceremony, a fucking amazing band similar to skywave and a place to bury strangers but with more of a joy division/new order influence (ceremony was also the name of the last joy division song, later released as new order's first single). this is their second album, highly recommended for any fan of the bands mentioned above. 11 tracks of post-punk basslines mixed with noisy guitars and fuzzy riffs with cold vocals and occasional synths. they're touring with screen vinyl image, go see them if you have the chance and buy their merch.

the renegades - duncannon shenanigan (2007)

the renegades - duncannon shenanigan (2007)

the renegades are a chicago jazz fusion trio. synth, bass, drums. this music is intricately constructed but has some badass solos as well. I saw these guys live a couple of years back - they do it live, and LOUD, so don't listen to this record at a low volume, because you just won't get it. also, there are at least a hundred tasty tasty synth tones on this album.

Immortal - All Shall Fall (2009)

immortal is back niggers! one of the best norwegian black metal bands from the 90s releases their first album since they got back together in 2006 and they stay true to their style. these sons of northern darkness bring an album of pure holocaust to fight battles in the north against blizzard beasts at the heart of winter. fucking loving this. fuck pussy melancholic ambient black metal, listen to trve norwegian black metal.

You Say Party! We Say Die! - XXXX (2009)

get it if you like: metric, le tigre, pretty girls make graves, the organ.

i had no idea you say party! we say die! had a new album coming out so finding this last night was a pretty cool surprise. their old lo-fi-ish dance-punk a la le tigre sound is still here but (just like le tigre) on their third album the band manages to mix it with a more mature sound and cleaner, brighter production and come out on top. i was a bit let down when i listened to their second album because it wasn't the same as the first one but they've won me over again with this one. i absolutely loved the tracks lonely's lunch and laura palmer's prom. kickass songs. get it and give it a couple listens before you pass any judgment, this is a grower.

Matt Wyatt - The Goodbye Waltz (2003)

A fantastic record of driving, high-energy old-time fiddling with really great backup. This type of fiddling is my absolute favorite to play and listen to. You probably haven't heard anything like this - it's not bluegrass or country, just one dude caressing your ears with one sweet tune after another.

P.S. it's deliciously lo-fi and informal, not a sterile studio product.

Mickey Factz - The Leak Vol 1: The Understanding/The Leak Vol. 2: The Inspiration (2008)

Some hip-hop. It's good, and pretty hot right now.

Also it's my birthday and these are direct links, so feel free to verbally fellate me in the comments for both.

The Radio Dept. - This Past Week EP (2005)

My favorite release from The Radio Dept. Dreamy keyboards; electronic beats; heartfelt, airy vocals; romantic, yearning atmosphere. Recommended for those who can appreciate some soothing pop.

Over here.

Jellyfish - Spilt Milk (1993)

An absolutely tremendous pop album from the early 90's. It sounds like Ben Folds Five, but with a Queen-esque style of vocal harmonization. Fun, catchy, and rockin'.

Don't worry, I'll be back with some death metal or something later in the week.

The Raveonettes - In and Out of Control (2009)

new friggin' raveonettes album fuck yes! their 4th album just leaked today in v0, no 192kbps scene bullshit. i haven't even listened to this yet but the single suicide was pretty cool so i expect the whole album to be amazing. btw anyone in mexico wants to take me to the october 4th depeche mode show? the raveonettes are the opening band D:

Loose Lips Sink Ships - s/t 7" (2009)

loose lips is a really great band from the chicago area. this is their new 7" vinyl, which contains a lot of really whimsical guitar goodness. the nice thing about these guys is that they don't concentrate so hard on playing technically impressive riffs that they forget that music should be fun and engaging.

sounds like: ghosts and vodka, polvo, tera melos

In other math rock news, listen to this guy's solo project, zefs chasing cara. this stuff leans more towards the needlessly complex, but it's not obnoxiously so.

Children of Nova - The Complexity of Light (2009)

A brilliant little EP from an up and coming San Diego prog-rock band. After seeing this posted in several share threads on you-know-where, I decided to give it a listen. And boy, was I not disappointed. Poppy, proggy, pretentious goodness that sounds like The Mars Volta, The Fall of Troy, and Karnivool combined. I hope they release a full length at some point, but for now, The Complexity of Light will suffice as my guilty "it's-prog-but-might-make-people-think-I'm-gay" pleasure.

Friend Buttons - Tarot Skirt (2009)

Hopefully this link survives. Album is pretty good. I feel like I can write this band off as making a string of good but not great records for the rest of their career. But I probably would have done the same to the early Boredoms, so you know whatever.

Another Phone - 8 Minutos EP (2009)

these guys sent me their EP and i liked it enough to post it here. another phone is a band from mexico city making a glitchy sort of idm-ish electronic music mixed with pianos, strings, brass instruments and accordion sounds. pretty cool, check it out.

Anarom - Caterpillar Roll (2009)

My friend told me to check out this album so I did, and was merrily surprised. This album is a mix of IDM and ambient. While relatively simple, I find it to be excessively enjoyable. The guy who made this album is trying to make a name for himself and I dig his tunes so I'm gonna promote this bitch as best I can. There are only 110 listens on right now, and I'd like for him to have at least 1,000 by a week from now, which is entirely plausible if 90 of you download this album and listen to most of it (which I think you'll find to be a rather easy task). So...get this album!

and visit his myspace

Narrows - New Distances (2009)

[new link...]

Botch. Oh, how I loved Botch. The thinking man's hardcore. If you're looking for br00tal breakdowns, and heavy chugs, you're reading the WRONG description. For those of you who want to hear more Botch Dave Verellen's voice, enjoy.
Tested the new DL myself. Thanks Sammy.

Totalt Jävla Mörker - Söndra & Härska (2009)

If that album cover isn't metal I don't know what is. Anyway, this is the fourth (I think) album from Totalt Jävla Mörker and translated to English the title means "Divide and Conquer." It is less grind and more crust/doom than the other albums. While in opinion not as good as Människans Ringa Värde and the S/T, this one definitely deserves some attention. It is a bit more melodic and easy on the ears, so I feel this will be more accessible to people than the previous albums. In either case, it is something to check out.

mouse on the keys - an anxious object (2009)

Delectable piano-oriented nu-jazz. So good. If you don't like mouse on the keys then you might as well be deaf.

Massive Attack - Splitting The Atom (2009)

Massive Attack - Splitting The Atom (2009)
New EP from Massive Attack, in lieu of their fifth album which has been pushed back in to a fifth year. Apparently they saw the whole decade-long Portishead drama and thought that was a smashing idea. I don't really like it. The instrumentals are kind of primitive, and the vocals range from languid listening to barely tolerable (Horace Andy, amongst my top ten male vocalists, sounds like he's pinching his nose all over the title track). On the other hand, there are flashes of brilliance in "Pray For Rain" that make me think LP5 could be as much of a departure from Mezzanine as that album was from their first two. At this stage, I can't think of any other excuse for the album taking so damn long. Here's hoping.

Also, sorry this triple-posted. Have fun with your RSS notifications now fuckers.

The Antlers - Hospice (2009)

If you've ever dropped acid or taken any other hallucinogen and experienced euphoria, the aesthetic created by this album is very reminiscent of that feeling. I don't listen to a lot of slowcore, so I'm not going to say anything else about this, other than a lot of people seem to really enjoy this album so I figured a good portion of you would get a kick out of it. If you enjoy this album, please post a comment.

Joy Division - Martin Hannett's Personal Mixes (2007)

from the cover: "features some of the recently discovered (previously unreleased) martin hannett mixes of joy division material and sound effects he and the band recorded." HOW FUCKING COOL IS THAT?? "the eternal" mixes on this album are amazing and shit like "N4 europop" will blow your mind. this is for fans of joy division and martin hannett only, highly doubt anyone else would appreciate something like this.

OOIOO - Armonico Hewa (2009)

ooioo is a side project of boredoms drummer yoshimi p-we (the pink robot-fighting yoshimi the flaming lips sing about). they're a pretty cool experimental-noise rock-all-girl band. their new album armonico hewa was released like a month ago and it's their most accessible album to date imo. chicks love it.

Silversun Pickups - Swoon (2009)

silversun pickups, great band, best of 2009, posting it a thousand years too late, etc. i was saving this post for tomorrow but i need to see if the twitter feed is working again, shit stopped working 4 days ago and i just noticed. click here to follow WFLM.

VA - The Haçienda Classics (2006)

i wanted to post this back in august to commemorate tony wilson (he died august 10th 2007), head of factory records (home of bands like joy division, new order, the durutti column, a certain ratio and the happy mondays), BUT fucking megaupload disappeared my links right after i finished uploading and today they magically appeared out of fucking nowhere. fuck yes. this is a 3 cd compilation album with music from the haçienda, factory records' club, run by wilson and new order. each cd has short intros from rob gretton, tony wilson and martin hannett and the whole thing was compiled/mixed by peter hook (he does a better job here than he does live tho, guy can't dj). includes early house, hip-hop, madchester bands and acid house artists, it's fucking great. makes you nostalgic for times you never lived and places you never visited. probably the best compilation album ever. enjoy.

Lykathea Aflame - Elvenefris (2000)

Lykathea Aflame is a Prague-based death metal band that, like many of its peers, is fascinated with ancient Egyptian mythology and imagery. Alternating between moments of face-melting intensity and surreal, atmospheric passages, "Elvenefris" is wild, unpredictable ride that may leave many fans of the genre scratching their heads.

Sounds like: a more melodic, subtle Nile? Something like that.

EDIT: Link is fixed. Hopefully.

The Protomen - Act II - The Father of Death (2009)

fuck yes. the new protomen album is out! a prequel to 2005's s/t album it tells the story of a young dr light fighting dr willy for the love a woman. i only listened to half the album before going to bed last night and i LOVED what i listened. near the end it gets so 80s-powerful, it's amazing. just wanted to share this before i have some breakfast and listen to the full album. enjoy.

A Place to Bury Strangers - Exploding Head (2009)

new aptbs album. you should know them by now, very e-famous band. this just leaked a couple of days ago 2 months before its release so i'm guessing this will be here for a short time before it gets removed by lawyers or label. worth getting.

hopefully it won't get deleted this time.

Boris & Torche - Chapter Ahead Being Fake (2009)

new split from my favorite jap band ever, boris, and stoners torche. this split was released a couple of weeks ago the same day as another boris split i'll post later tonight.

link down by request.

Kid Cudi - Man on the Moon: the End of Day (2009)

it fucking took FOREVER to upload this album (it took like one hour and a half but it felt longer) so get it and force yourself to enjoy it. i'm not sure if cudi is as HIP as jay-z and won't mind his album being posted on the internet before its release date SO HURRY in case it gets deleted. the music's ok, chillaxed hip-hop at slow tempos. could be a mood thing to like this tbh. producers include emile, plain pat, kanye west and ratatat.

Florence + The Machine - Lungs (2009)

2 lazy 2 type. from

Florence + The Machine (recording as Florence And The Machine) is the name of Florence Welch and a collaboration of other artists who provide backing music for her voice. Florence is an art- college dropout from Camberwell, London, who was discovered singing Motown covers in a nightclub toilet, drunk. Musically Florence and the Machine’s sound is generally referred to as soul inspired indie rock.

PS: howl is my favorite song on this album.
DECEMBER 3RD 2009 EDIT: drumming song is now my favorite song on this album.

Earth - The Bees Made Honey in the Lion's Skull (2008)

Beautiful, melodic drone. I'm not sure what else to say about this album, having never really heard anything like it before. I'm fairly certain that Earth began as a drone metal band, but you won't find any Sunn O)))-esque refrigerator noises on this album, if that's what you associate with drone. There's a bit of piano here and there, but the star of the album is the variety of relatively simple chord progressions that drive each song. Hooray for minimalism.

Ducktails - Ducktails (2009)

The one-man psychedelic pop project by some guitarist from New Jersey. Blends distorted guitars over looping pop riffs. This album reminds me of Aphex Twin's "Selected Ambient Works", but more upbeat/droning. Some great tracks on here, and one of my favorite albums to throw on while I'm trying to fall asleep

Geskia - Eclipse 323 (2009)

This is the new album by Geskia, obviously. While in my opinion not as good as Silent77, this is still a very good IDM album. Very chilled out and relaxing, but still manages to keep your attention. If you haven't downloaded Silent77 yet, get that album for fuck's sake- it's awesome. If you have Silent77, get Eclipse 323. Enjoy.
